How to Protect Your Hardscaping in the Winter

Feb 23, 2022

Your hardscaping is what gives your garden an original feel that makes you the envy of the neighborhood. 87% of purchasers, according to Kiplinger, desire an outdoor patio area. An outdoor patio area can bring a fresh new feel to your home. Winter can take a harsh toll on the well-being of your outdoor area so it's important that you know how to limit the potential damage. Here are some ideas as to how you can protect your outdoor space this winter.

Keep the Snow Off

Instead of using a shovel, use a snowblower if you reside in a snowy climate. A snowblower's rubber blades are gentler on pavers and pebbles and will not scratch them. If you absolutely must use a shovel, choose a plastic one rather than a metal one. Metal will corrode the surface over time, eventually causing the hardscaping to deteriorate.

Store What you Can

If you reside in a location prone to snow or ice, storing your sculptures or fountains is an excellent idea. Cleaning these concrete accessories at least once a year is also a good approach to look for cracks or damage. To avoid further damage from inclement weather throughout the winter, clean, drain and store your statues or fountains in a dry spot.

Consider Water Runoff

It's a good idea to look at water runoff before winter arrives because it can not only damage your hardscaping when it freezes, but it can also create accidents. To avoid major damage, water should be channeled away from pavers and bricks from locations like gutters.

Create Level Surfaces

Before inclement weather arrives, inspect your walkway for cracks or holes. Puddles of water in these spots will worsen the problem by causing cracks and potholes to form as the ice freezes and melts. Furthermore, leveling out hardscaping to eliminate trip hazards buried beneath a coating of snow and ice can help to avoid dangerous winter mishaps. In the event of ice, keep walkways even and safe.

Don't Use Salt

Although it is necessary to deice your steps and walkways, salt can be detrimental to hardscaping. Calcium chloride and rock salt corrode concrete and can harm neighboring plants and landscaping. Sand is a better option for hardscaping and landscaping, but a gritty sealer in high-traffic areas is even better.

Your hardscaping is your pride and joy. Protect it in the winter months by using a snowblower, controlling runoff, keeping surfaces flat, and not using salt. Follow these tips and you will be able to enjoy your hardscaping for a long time.
